Properly Store Your Wine

You are here: Home » Moving & Storage » Properly Store Your Wine

Winery and vineyard owners are the best sources for wine storage advice. Vineyards and wineries have experience storing large quantities of wine in retail establishments and on site for aging. Wine, if stored properly, can provide years of enjoyment with a small investment in its care.

No matter if you’re a military consumer or an random individual, knowing the most about your wine or the type of wine will help in determining exactly how long it should be “aged.” Some wines worsen with improper aging, so the more educated on the type of wine, the better the drinking experience.

For extensive collections it is best to construct a wine “cellar” in your home or locate a storage facility with strict climate controls. Constructing a wine cellar can be as easy as converting a closet or other storage space that is out of direct sunlight and remains dark during the day.

Always store corked wine on its side, preferably label side up. Storing wine on its side keeps the cork moist, which helps to keep oxygen out and preserve the integrity of the wine.

Maintain a constant temperature and humidity level. Temperatures should remain around 54 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity around 70 degrees. Storing small collections in a separate wine cooler will help to maintain the climate. If the wine is going to be stored in a cellar or alternate storage unit, test for the climate and humidity levels. It may be necessary to install devices to regulate climate.

Store the wine only with other wines. Strong smells or odors can permeate the cork and ruin a wine. Your refrigerator, therefore, is not the best for lengthy wine storage.
