Should You Move?
- Should You Move? - Know The Facts - Should You Move?
Explore. Dream. Discover.
Aren’t those the reasons anyone decides to move? Don’t we move because we want a change in our lives? Or maybe life is forcing us to move, meaning we got a new job in a new location or we have to downsize to a smaller place?
Whatever the reason is you have to ask yourself, “Should I move?” Asking yourself this question could save you a lot of heartache in the end.
If you are seriously thinking about moving, you have to think, “What will I miss?” Moving means giving up a lot of things that you are familiar with, such as friends, family, a job, and places of entertainment. Are you willing to give up those things for a move?
To decide on what you will miss, make a list of all the things you are attached to where you currently live. If you are not attached to too many things, perhaps you should really consider a move. But, if you are attached to a lot of things, maybe you should decide to stay put—at least for awhile.
Another question you might want to ask yourself is, “What is making me unhappy about my present situation?”
If you are unhappy with a job or relationship, perhaps moving isn’t the best thing to do. Perhaps you need to change your job or end your relationship—not move. Look at your situation and decide if making some changes in your life would actually improve your life. If the answer is “yes,” maybe a move isn’t necessary.
But, if you decide to move you have to consider what will change when you do. Make a list of the positive things that are associated with the new city you are moving to, such as the neighborhood, a bigger or smaller city, the cost of living, schools, weather, etc. If you do this you will be better prepared for the changes once you do move.
The practicalities of moving are always in question when you decide to move to a new city. There are several practical questions to ask yourself:
- How much will moving cost me?
- Can I/we afford to move right now?
- If you have children, is it alright to move during the school year?
- If you have children, how much will it burden their academic performance?
- Is this a good time of year to find a job?
- Is my family and I emotionally stable to handle a stressful move right now?
- What is the availability of housing in the new city?
If you answer all of these questions and consider the practicalities of moving, decide what kind of changes a move will bring, and have come to terms with what you will move, then you are probably ready to make a decision on whether or not to move. Doing all of these things before an actual move will ensure a less stressful time once you do move.
