Moving Your Plants
- How to Pack for Your Move - Moving Your Plants
When you move, moving with your plants can present some special challenges. Like any family member, plants can have trouble adjusting to a move. However, if you plan ahead and are careful, you may be able to take your favorite plants with you when you move. Here’s how to do it:
- First, see if your moving company will take the plants, or if you’ll have to move them yourself. Moving insurance won’t cover plants, and moving companies won’t allow them in moving vans if the distance is over 150 miles or the trip will take longer than 24 hours. Also, check the regulations in the state or country you’re moving to and make sure moving with your plants is legal.
- Start preparing your plants weeks or even months before the move. For safety’s sake, it’s best to move your plants in plastic containers, so start by transplanting them. Transplant the plants as far advance of the move as you can, so they have time to adjust to their new home before the trauma of moving day.
- If your plants have any pests, treat them before you move even if the plant seems healthy. Moving stresses plants, and pests will pounce on a weakened plant.
- If appropriate, prune plants to make them easier to move.
- Plants should be the last items loaded and the first items unloaded.
- After the move, help your plants recover with a dose of their favorite fertilizer or some compost tea!
